Wichita, was named after the Wichita Native American tribe that inhabited the area, was established as a trading post in 1864 at the confluence of the Arkansas River and the Little Arkansas River. The first settlers were Jesse Chisholm and James Mead. Chisholm pioneered the Chisholm Trail in 1865 when Mead sent him Southwest to trade with the Wichita tribe for buffalo hides. It soon became a major center for cattle drives from Texas to Wichita where beef could be shipped east by railroad.

  Today, Wichita is the largest city in Kansas. We are known as the “Air Capitol of the World” with five aircraft manufacturing firms:
